Orthopaedic surgery roll out of the National Consultant Information Portal (NCIP) was the focus of an NOA webinar held on 6 July 2022.  NCIP, a secure online portal which enables NHS consultants and surgeons to review information about their clinical activity and benchmark patient outcomes, is currently being released across in England.

NOA’s lunchtime webinar which had attendance from clinicians across the country, featured guest speakers including Stephen Lowis, NCIP Programme Implementation and Insights Lead, NHS England and NHS Improvement and Deborah Higgs, NCIP Orthopaedic Clinical Lead and Clinical Director Specialist Surgeries, Consultant Shoulder & Elbow Surgeon Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust.

NOA Webinar Lead and Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (RJAH), Cormac Kelly, chaired the session. Cormac kicked off with an overview of the COVID situation nationally and introduced the webinar’s speakers. He then polled attendees and asked ‘Are you familiar with NCIP ?’  50% said yes and 50% said no.

The first guest speaker, Stephen Lowis, gave an overview of the NCIP portal and how it works. Deborah, who provided a clinical perspective emphasised that the NCIP Orthopaedic Roll Out is in its first stages with more to come with input from societies and other key stakeholders.

The portal provides access to individual outcomes data and unit-level data across a range of surgical specialties. It is intended to support NHS consultant surgeons in England as part of their personal learning and development. NCIP provides both local and national benchmarks against which consultants can review and assess their patient outcomes with the aim of delivering improved patient care.

Deborah and Stephen were on hand to answer questions from attendees in a busy question and answer session before Chair, Cormac closed the session. The webinar, which one attendee said they “never lost interest in the content” for can be viewed in full here. For the latest on NOA events, check out the NOA events pages.
